What should patients know about the risk of GvHD after stem cell transplantation?

Mohamad Mohty, FR

Know GvHD was pleased to speak with Mohamad Mohty, Hôpital Saint-Antoine and Sorbonne University, Paris, FR. We asked, What should patients know about the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) after stem cell transplantation?

Mohty explains that GvHD is a possible complication after allogeneic stem cell transplantation, but not all patients will develop it. He notes that the risk of GvHD is influenced by factors such as donor and patient characteristics, and the transplantation approach. He explains that if GvHD does occur, it can range from mild to more severe. He highlights that advances in donor selection, preventive treatments, and close monitoring have reduced the risk of GvHD and improved outcomes. He strongly encourages patients to report any new symptoms such as rash, diarrhea, nausea, or dry eyes, as early recognition often leads to more effective treatment.
